KNYSNA NEWS - The Grade 5, 6 and 7 learners at Oakhill Prep took part in the SA Mathematics Challenge earlier this year, and 26 learners achieved certificates.
The challenge is an independent examination coordinated by the SA Mathematics Foundation and written by over 1 000 schools nationwide.
The questions are aimed at conceptual knowledge, the application of knowledge in new situations, problem-solving, reasoning, communication and general mathematical thinking. Each question is a challenge and therefore a question solved is an achievement in itself.
After writing the first round, 52 Oakhill students qualified for the second round in July. After this round, two Oakhill learners from were invited to write the third and final round in September in Cape Town, where 431 students from Grade 4 to 7 countrywide competed for top honours.
The final results were recently released, and of 26 learners who achieved certificiates, 16 received bronze and eight received silver, while Alexa Fioravanti and Victoria Still were the two learners who received gold certificates.
