KNYSNA NEWS - Algoa FM listeners donated R372 496.86 in sums of money ranging from R50 to R100 000 in response to an appeal made by Algoa Cares Rescue to support survivors of the June fires.

In addition, scores of blankets, clothing and food parcels were also donated.

Algoa FM arranged drop-off sites at the Eden Meander lifestyle centre, Mosselbaai mall Heiderand, Langeberg mall and Knysna, according to Dohné Damons of Algoa FM.

The Eden Lions created a centre for all donations collected in Port Elizabeth and in the Garden Route, and packaged and distributed it to areas affected in Knysna and along the Garden Route.

The cash was donated to the Knysna Municipality Fire Relief Fund to ensure that those who have been affected by the fires receive the necessary aid.

In addition, learners of three schools in the Garden Route whose families have been affected by the fires, received uniform donations.

Stepping Stones preprimary school has been refunded after the school purchased uniforms for its learners who were affected by the fire.

The learners of Chris Nissen Primary School and Percy Mdala High School, who were unable to source funding to purchase school uniforms, have received funding thanks to the generous donations made by those who responded to the call to action by Algoa Cares Rescue. “On behalf of the learners who have received support through the funds raised, I would like to say thank you to everyone who made a contribution,” said Percy Mdala principal Nicholas Njozela.

“Your donation has left a positive impact on the learners," he added.

“The reach of our call to action through Algoa Cares Rescue exceeded our expectations,” said Algoa FM managing director Dave Tiltmann. “We received a national response from listeners who made selfless donations in aid of those affected by the fires and we can’t thank everyone enough.”
