KNYSNA NEWS - In the two days since Level 3 lockdown was instituted around the country, Knysna Provincial Hospital has seen a ‘significant increase’ in patient numbers, with most incidents alcohol-related.
According to Western Cape Department of Health spokesperson, Nadia Ferreira, the hospital’s emergency centre has borne the brunt of the increase in numbers since 1 June.
“These are mostly alcohol-related trauma incidents,” she explained.
Ferreira also pointed out that there has been an increase in other alcohol related illnesses such as pancreatitis. “Our after-hours case load has essentially doubled the last two days albeit from a very low base during lockdown,” she said. “We had an average of eight assault cases for 24 – 31 May compared to 18 on the 1st and 20 on the 2nd.”
