KNYSNA NEWS - Local swimming superstar Aimee Canny was last night officially announced as a member of Team South Africa that will be headed to Tokyo for the Summer Olympics next month.
Canny (17) has qualified as part of the women's 4x100m medley relay team, the first SA women's 4x100m medley relay to take part in an Olympics since Beijing 2008.
Canny is the youngest in her relay team, which has an average age of only 21, with Tatjana Schoenmaker (who will be 24 at the Olympics) the oldest. Canny will swim the freestyle leg, Schoenmaker the breaststroke stretch, Erin Gallagher (22) the butterfly, and Mariella Venter (21) the backstroke.
Canny's mom, Denni-Lynn, is immensely proud of her daughter. "Words can't begin to describe how proud we all are," she says. "Aimee has worked incredibly hard to get here and it was so rewarding to see her name announced as part of the swimming squad."
Very excited to see golden girl @TRSchoenmaker and other swimming debutants joining @chadleclos for Team SA. Good luck team.

SA swimming head coach Graham Hill is excited for this year's Olympics with the SA swimming team that's been selected.
"We have a very young swimming team, and everyone will be making their Olympic debuts," he said to KPH.
"It is still a strong team, and we are looking forward to see what we can produce at the Olympics. They hold a very bright future for SA swimming."
