KNYSNA NEWS - Animal shelter Knysna Animal Welfare Society (Kaws) recently benefitted from a donation for an event at local eatery Freshline Fisheries.
The event was held on 26 March, with tickets covering a two-course meal and entertainment by Afroquartez - four voices of varying ranges performing light operatic numbers.
Eighty guests sang along and danced the night away.
A portion of the ticket sales was donated to Kaws for their ongoing Steri-drive.
The animal shelter has, over the past two years, struggled to raise much-needed funds to cover its basic running costs.
Keeping its services to the Knysna community going remains a huge and constant challenge as the organisation relies on donations to survive.
Two long-serving Kaws volunteers, Gill Hogg and Christine Heywood, have been appealing to the Knysna community, initially coffee shops and restaurants, to support their fundraising efforts and donate to the Steri-drive.
According to Heywood, the aim is to sterilise as many dogs and cats as possible to prevent thousands of unwanted animals being abandoned and subjected to huge suffering and neglect.
"The level of compassion for those who are unable to speak for themselves has so far been utterly amazing and it has been heart-warming to witness the depth of kindness and generosity in our very own unique and special town, even though so many people have also been experiencing their own difficulties," Heywood said.
