WESTERN CAPE NEWS - Western Cape Provincial Traffic Officers have arrested 111 individuals over the past week on suspicion of driving under the influence of alcohol.
The Western Cape Minister of Mobility, Ricardo Mackenzie, expressed his concern regarding the serious threat that drunk drivers pose to themselves, their passengers, and other road users.
Minister Mackenzie urged everyone to find a safer way to get home and emphasized the importance of responsible driving.
During the ongoing festive season, Western Cape's roads have remained busy, with an influx of residents and visitors.
In response to this, the Provincial Traffic Services have maintained a strong presence on major routes, conducting various operations to ensure road safety.
From 27 December 2023, to 1 January, Provincial Traffic Officers conducted 263 integrated roadblocks, vehicle check points, and speed control operations. A staggering 28,379 vehicles were stopped and checked across the Western Cape during this period.
Tragically, during the same period, there were 19 recorded crashes resulting in 20 fatalities.
As the Western Cape continues to experience a busy holiday season, motorists are reminded to obey traffic regulations, drive responsibly, and never get behind the wheel while under the influence of alcohol.
