UPDATE 8 MAY 2019 @ 08:25 - The N2 has now been opened.
PLETTENBERG BAY NEWS AND VIDEO - Stun grenade shots have been echoeing through Plettenberg Bay since 05:00 this morning as riot police are attempting to disperse protestors gathered on the N2 since 22:00 last night.
The N2 is closed near the foot bridge at a local spot called Rastas.
Municipal spokesman Manfred van Rooyen said the action followed a meeting in the Qolweni community on Tuesday evening around 7pm in the community. He added the protestors have since hurled rocks at passing vehicles and have used a large rubbish bin to barricade the road. Tyres were also set alight and thrown from the bridge over the N2 at Qolweni.
Police have been on the scene since last night.
“Some of the Qolweni protestors also went into New Horizons to blow whistles. This is usually a call to protest action.”
Traffic has been rerouted through Plettenberg Bay onto the Robberg/Airport road.
“The protesters are apparently mobilizing a stay away from voting in the a national and provincial elections. Other issues, concerns are less clear at this stage as no petition or list of demands has been presented.”
