WESTERN CAPE NEWS - We call on residents of the Western Cape to save our summer and encourage those who have yet to receive their jabs, especially those at high risk (age 50+) of contracting Covid-19, to join the vaccination drive this week.
We need to protect as many residents as possible in support of greater freedom for the upcoming summer months, which is also when scientists predict a possible 4th wave of infections.
A calculation by the Western Cape Government (WCG) shows that those who join the vaccine drive before 20 October can still be fully vaccinated before we enter the festive season.
This move will not only mean so very much for individual safety as vaccines have proven, but also decrease the negative impact of the wave of infections as anticipated over the festive period.
MPP Wendy Philander comments: “Covid-19 continues to present many uncertainties in all aspects of our lives and may continue to do so unless we make sure that all eligible residents, especially those most vulnerable to the virus, receive their lifesaving jabs.
Although we’ve seen a fantastic uptake of the vaccines by younger residents, we do need to put a lot of effort into making sure that the 50+ year-old age group gets vaccinated too.
The vaccine successes thus far show movement towards greater immunity against Covid-19 and an easing of pressure on the health system. What we cannot afford, however, is a loss of momentum in the vaccine drive towards greater recovery and achieving population effective protection.
We must actively increase participation of the vaccine drive, as it offers a key opportunity to navigate and end the period of uncertainty. We long to unite with our family and loved ones over the holidays and protecting ourselves, will make this a reality. This now means we must quickly embark on a road to recovery and lay a good foundation as we approach the New Year as well.
Another calculation by the WCG shows that only 52% of those in this high-risk, 50+ year old age group have been fully vaccinated and only 9% are partially vaccinated. I will write to the Provincial Minister of Health for further information on her Department’s plans to further address the age-related disparity in the uptake of vaccines.”
Vaccinations out-weigh the negative effects of Covid-19, not only for those who are more vulnerable but for everyone one looking forward to greater freedom as we quickly approach summer.
As the DA in the Western Cape, we will support the provincial government’s ongoing management of Covid-19. It is critical to the every recovery plan of each sector, and rectifying any vaccine uptake disparity is a key focus.
