PLETTENBERG BAY NEWS - Following several complaints about vehicle sale scams, Plettenberg Bay police have issued a caution to car buyers.
“Plett police is warning the community members because of cases where people bought vehicles online and were subsequently robbed of their cash,” local police spokesperson Captain Marlene Pieterse said.
“Ensure that you inspect what you are purchasing before you pay for it,” she added.
She further said that to protect yourself against fraud and scams there are a few safety measures that could be implemented.
“Never respond to emails or cellphone messages appearing to be from your bank, which request your personal details. Remember that no bank will ever ask you to confirm or update your account details by email.”
She added that you should never save internet banking passwords or other personal information on your computer desktop.
“Do not leave your computer unattended after you have entered your internet banking password. Always log off or sign off at the end of a session.”
Pieterse said it is also wise to avoid doing internet banking in public areas such as internet cafes, or on any computer that can be accessed by people you do not know.
“Finally, place sensible transaction limits on your accounts.”
