PLETTENBERG BAY BUSINESS NEWS - At the precise point that the dream to be a writer was unfolding, a "carbon footprint" test caught my attention. Thinking I lived lightly, it was with delight that I did the test.
However, the smug smile was wiped from my face when I assessed my paper usage. Zillions of trees falling to the ground crashed into my consciousness.
I flinched at the thought of the thousands of litres of precious water needed to make the paper that would carry the words of all the untold stories I wanted to write. My heart sank: my enormous feet would tread carbon all over the planet.
The refusal to give up the dream gave rise to a new commitment: Candylwood would be kind to the earth. After much research, we developed a range of lifestyle products from natural, recycled or reused materials.
A signature scent, blended from six pure essential oils, is infused in the range of handcrafted natural products: soy & coconut candles, soaps, room sprays, essential oils, ceramic burners and notebooks.
The Candylwood fragrance is distinct, uniquely individual and has at times been accused of being addictive. It lifts the mind beyond the ordinary and inspires a yearning to be spectacular. The effect is delightfully uplifting.
Products made by hand have a different feel, in a similar way that vegetables eaten from the home garden taste different from those in a store. Perhaps the difference is in the touch of a hand, or maybe it stirs, however gently, a childhood memory of handcrafted treasures. Whatever it is, this elusive quality is found in all the Candylwood products, crafted and packaged in the forests of the Crags in the Western Cape.
Candylwood products such as these journals are crafted and packaged in the forests of The Crags outside Plettenberg Bay.
The candles, made with Soy Wax, Coconut Oil, Sweet Almond Oil and the signature essential oil blend, are hand-poured into containers. This blend of oils creates a great body moisturiser and can be applied after burning, while the wax is soft.
The soaps are completely natural and made by hand in the old-fashioned way. The room sprays are blended using pure rainwater. The ceramic oil burners are designed so the essential oils lift gently into the air preserving their therapeutic qualities. Made by Almer of Funky Furnace, each hand-carved star emits magical starlight.
Stone or recycled paper is used for the notebooks and journals, and yes, the paper is made from crushed stone. When putting pen to the smooth, silky stone paper, ideas and dreams flow with ease. The book covers are made with recycled newspaper and fine quality linen or cotton fabric, woven locally in the Crags, by Mungo.
All packaging is handmade using recycled/biodegradable materials. Candylwood will, no matter how inconvenient or expensive, choose the earth-friendly option.
Candylwood inspires a love of creating beautiful moments, those moments in-between work and obligations. It is for when the demands of the day are behind you, and you run a deep, fragrant bath; fill the room with candlelight; and immerse yourself in the sensory magic of the moment.
