MOSSEL BAY NEWS - As South Africa celebrates Youth Month, few people understand the power of sport to shape young lives quite like the Dotsure SWD Eagles Head Coach, Heyneke Meyer.
Throughout his distinguished coaching career, Meyer has worked with some of the country’s most talented rugby players.
Yet despite the trophies, test matches, and professional success stories, he remains convinced that the true value of rugby extends far beyond the scoreboard.
Building South African rugby from the ground up
According to Meyer, youth development is the foundation of long-term success in South African rugby.
“Our country’s schoolboy rugby is probably the strongest in the world and has become one of the greatest pipelines for future Springboks,” he explains.
Meyer believes that investing in youth rugby is about far more than developing future professional players. It is about creating opportunities for young people while building stronger communities and a lasting passion for the game.
“Sports teach discipline, teamwork, accountability, leadership, and how to handle adversity. Those are lessons that stay with young people for the rest of their lives.”
Creating youth rugby opportunities
One of the biggest challenges facing young athletes today is access to consistent opportunities and support structures.
While South Africa continues to produce world-class rugby talent, many young players face obstacles that can prevent them from reaching their full potential. Meyer believes mentorship plays a critical role in helping young athletes navigate those challenges.
“Young players need positive role models who guide them and help them understand that success comes from standards and daily consistency,” he says. “Talent may open the door, but character keeps you there.”
This philosophy forms part of the broader vision being developed within the Dotsure SWD Eagles team, where creating more youth rugby opportunities remains a priority.
Preparing athletes for life after sport
Meyer is equally passionate about ensuring young athletes develop beyond the rugby field.
While professional rugby can provide opportunities, he is quick to remind players that sporting careers are often short and unpredictable.
“I always encourage players to continue learning and developing themselves away from rugby,” he says. "Education and life skills are incredibly important because they prepare players for life after rugby.”
For Meyer, the ultimate measure of success is helping young people become responsible leaders and productive members of society.
The role of community support
Meyer has already witnessed the impact that community support can have throughout the Southern Cape. Local supporters have rallied behind the Dotsure SWD Eagles and embraced the team’s renewed vision. He believes this support creates something powerful for young players to aspire to.
“We want kids to believe that one day they can wear an Eagles jersey and represent their communities with pride.”
Through the continued support of local communities, schools, clubs, and partners such as dotsure.co.za, Meyer believes rugby can continue to create opportunities and inspire future generations across the region.
