The art work at this iconic four-star hotel has captured the imagination of visitors from all over the world. The complete refurbishment of its 57 rooms and reception areas allows the hotel to retain the ‘wow’ factor.
The striking, natural-log staircase banisters have always captured my imagination and on the landing the yellowwood owl sculpture. The huge arch-shaped stained windows dominate and yet illuminate the reception.
Originally designed to reflect Knysna’s rich historic ties to the wood industry, this hugely popular tourist hotel has over the past 12 years of its existence kept its cutting edge timber-log design.
When a wonderful invite to spend the weekend was extended I did not hesitate to accept so as to revisit my favourite hotel.
I luxuriated in the spa-bath and jacuzzi, after taking a brisk swim in the pool where deck chairs invitingly beckon. At the sumptuous buffet breakfast a spread is laid on. This includes fresh fruit, cereals, cold meats and cheese in addition to a hearty bacon, egg and sausages breakfast. In true four-star form there is an ice bucket, kettle and tea tray, and fresh fruit in a luxurious, elegant bedroom complete with easy chair and balcony.
Situated five minutes’ walk from the Knysna Waterfront, the hotel has the perfect location for exploring the major tourist attractions of Knysna.
At the cosy bar (The Joinery ) you will be undoubtedly be offered Danny’s signature cocktail, the legendary ‘Township Toilet’. The unappetising mind image turns out to be a wonderful shooter that magically evolves, as Danny pours the various layers.
Whilst the revamp is hugely important to keep the hotel in the forefront of marketability, it is the warmth imparted by the staff that helps to make it the friendly and welcoming experience I enjoyed.
General managers Peter and Marti Dale have been with the hotel since inception.
Peter explained: "More than 50% of the staff that we started off with 12 years ago are still here. Thus the timeless grace of the hotel is complemented by the staff efficiency, bringing an altogether inviting quaintness.
"The owners felt that it was time to freshen up the rooms and public areas, without losing the understated elegance of the natural wood interiors. All soft furnishings have been replaced and are now complemented by classy wall-paper finishes. Large flat-screen TVs and new air-conditioners have been installed in every room.
"The reactions from operators and guests alike have been overwhelmingly positive. Tour operators favour the seamless, but relaxed service offered which fits in with their tight schedules."
In the current tough economic climate where holidays are a luxury, Knysna Log-Inn is just fantastic value for money and well worth a visit.
My conclusion: The Knysna Log-Inn is the perfect place for a weekend breakaway (even for Georgians).
A group of friends could book in, go for a spot of golf (three excellent golf courses) using the hotel’s memberships at Pezula and Simola, shop, hike, visit art galleries and enjoy coffee at The Heads.
It is not for nothing that this excellent establishment has won their category in the AA Travel Guide accommodation awards for many years, until they were put into the ‘Hall of Fame’.
