The Knysna Photographic Society holds theme-based in-house competitions three times a year as a way for members to continue improving their skills as photographers and to expose them to the community of Knysna and surrounds.
Members may enter two images that best represent their interpretation of the chosen theme and the judging is undertaken by external independent judges. The judges for this competition were Justine Edwards of Justine Edwards Photography, Jolanda Meyer of Jolanda Meyer Styling and Glynis Vogel, a well-known local artist. All three are well-known photographers/artists in their own right.
Fifty-seven images were submitted.
A new category was added to the usual junior and senior ccategories, namely ‘Non-Photographer Spouse’. This was to encourage photographers spouses to submit images and explore and support their loved ones interest, and ultimately to take up the art of photography as well. The idea was well received. Six non-photographer spouses entered the competition, nine images were received and judged by the external judges. The winners were Matt Covaar, Daleen Maré, Hedwig Malan and Peter Birkett. As the saying goes: “If you can’t beat them, join them.”
Dr Joan Louwrens was a guest speaker and in her her address, entitled A Passion for Life, she shared the story of her bike trip from Cairo to Cape Town, a few years back.
Hans Lammens presented an interesting talk on how how to develop black-and-white film using coffee as the main ingredient - an experiment he has developed himself and it works!
