KNYSNA ENTERTAINMENT NEWS - Carpe Musicam!'s next concert series will be presented over the weekend of 17, 18 and 19 May in George, Mossel Bay and Knysna respectively. In contrast to their previous offering, Fantasia 2019 – which included pipers, drummers and dancers from Cape Town, the new show titled Choruses, Concertos…and Carmen! will feature only local talent who are active members of the Carpe Musicam! orchestra and choir.
Conductor Norman Carless is interested to see if the support for a more classical concert will be as great as the Celtic-themed event which attracted more than 900 music lovers to Eden Place and another 400 to the Knysna concert.
"There will be opera and solo favourites that are seldom performed in our area. The Slaves Chorus from Nabucco and Nessun Dorma are two which spring immediately to mind," he said. "Our version of Nessun Dorma will be rather special as it features the entire choir instead of just a solo tenor. The climax is breathtaking," he added.
There will not only be classical music on the programme. The love theme from the film Out of Africa has been blended with the Mozart Clarinet Concerto slow movement to create a unique item of serene beauty. Local matric student Marianne Holm will be performing the solo clarinet part.
In her solo debut with the group, contralto Wilma de Villiers will sing an atmospheric medley of You'll Never Walk Alone and Climb Every Mountain with support from the choir and orchestra.
Petite Knysna resident Jolandie du Plessis will rock us with her Für Elise Boogie performed on her huge tuba, and the Carmen Fantasy will feature many orchestra members in solo passages – not to be missed is the violin duet version of the Habanera with Calvin Steyn and Lesley Bostander leading the way.
For the Knysna concert, tickets at R100 cash per adult (free for learners) will be available at The German Shop in Waterfront Drive or at the door on the night. For EFT arrangements beforehand, SMS Elsabe on 073 857 2952.
