PLETTENBERG BAY NEWS - Plettenberg Bay youngsters interested in breaking into the film industry will have the opportunity to learn from the best with a free orientation programme later this month.
iKasi Creative Media, in collaboration with the Bitou Municipality, has decided to host a five-day orientation programme for film and digital media.
The course was designed for 30 youngsters aged between 18 and 35. Participants need to have a matric certificate, but not work full-time.
The training will be presented from Monday 31 May to Friday 4 June at Piesang Valley Hall in Plettenberg Bay and is designed for participants to learn new skills that equip them to tell their own stories, using their mobile phones. The course will also touch on entrepreneurial development and the many career paths in the film and television industry.
After the five-day training, 25 students will be selected to participate in a three-month skills programme, giving them access to industry professionals who train in the different filmmaking departments.
The practical component of the training will be a 24-minute documentary about the history of the area, looking specifically at forced removals and the displacement of people. The film is also a celebration of heritage as told through the eyes of the youth.
Learners will be guided through the technical aspects of the script-to-screen process. Those who complete the full programme will be issued a Media, Information and Communication Technologies (MICT) and Services Sector Education and Training Authority (Seta) accredited certificate.
iKasi Creative Media was started by former Plett local Lika Berning, Lamise Inglis and Khanya Sosibo, each with many years of experience in the film, television, and entertainment industry. Today their programmes are taking place across the West Coast and Garden Route.
"Our vision is to bring hope and purpose to marginalised and previously disadvantaged youth, to empower them to unlock employment and entrepreneurship opportunities in digital media, in their towns, and to tell their own stories using accessible technology," the trio said.
