KNYSNA NEWS - Carmen’s School of Dance hosted a high tea recently to raise funds for their December show.
The monies collected will be utilised to fund the props and costumes needed for the school's end-of-year extravaganza.
Those who attended the function at the Knysna Primary School on Saturday, August 5 were not only fortunate enough to watch select performances put on by some of Carmen’s dancers, in the age categories from six and under to 14 and under, but also got to sample a comprehensive range of savoury and sweet delights baked by the mothers.
The dance performances ranged from classical solos, such as demonstrating “pointe” performed by the very talented Nadine du Plessis, to demi-caractère duets such as the spicy salsa, performed by the diminutive Milani Xhongo and Celyn Godfrey, to national solos depicting nationalities such as Russia by Danielle Kolbe. Between the dance sets Charmaine Kruger and her Ace Models girls showcased active and dance wear from Tiger Lilly Dancewear.
The cherry on top was a speech given by internationally acclaimed ballet judge and examiner Lynn Fouché, who shared some of her wisdom and experience with the students. She emphasised how important the discipline is that ballet teaches you, but stressed that dance was to be enjoyed and that the secret lies in understanding the language and narrative of dance, where you have the ability to express yourself in motion just as fluently as through speech.

She did lament that there were far too few boys and young men actively involved in dance and that she hoped this would change. So, to all the young men out there who want to up their fitness and build beautiful physiques, by swopping TV for tights, the stage is yours.
