The participants were learners from Murray High School and Plettenberg Bay Secondary School. The art and design workshop participants were exposed to various forms of artistic expression including drawing, painting, design, stencil-making and slides.
Participants worked with two facilitators, Margie Ford and Donne Rundle. The girls used bold colours and food jargon as their theme whilst the boys worked with birds as a theme and used pictures and words that convey sounds. The workshop culminated in the painting of two real cars.
The facilitators expressed their joint vision of using the opportunity to encourage students to work together and seek creative solutions. They view the arts as a platform to build bridges between communities and to show how active art can inspire.
The participants expressed how much they enjoyed learning about how colours complement each other and the importance of passion and boldness in their approach to their art. They also expressed their appreciation for the people who put in the time, effort and funding to make such opportunities available to them.
B10F acknowledged and thanked Angus Grieg of Ebenezer Estate for the donation of two cars and enamel paint. Bay College provided the use of its art room and collection of art books.
Six drama students from Plettenberg Bay Secondary School attended James Cairns' production, Dirt. They were accompanied by their facilitator, Candice Ludick. "Thanks to the Bitou 10 Foundation, these kids have been exposed to live theatre (some of them for the first time). The value of these experiences in shaping these youngsters' perspectives is immeasurable. If we are to create theatre of a high calibre it is imperative that we broaden the performers' frames of reference," said Ludick.
B10F thanked Anne Fermor, the Plett Fringe Festival organiser, for her support in accommodating the learners.
