GARDEN ROUTE | KAROO NEWS - In the realm of paediatric healthcare, few journeys are as challenging and emotionally taxing as that of a child undergoing a stem cell transplant procedure.
In the wake of this life-altering process, paediatric patients and their families often find themselves navigating a landscape fraught with uncertainty, fear and emotional upheaval.
To help, the South African Bone Marrow Registry (SABMR) would like to support patients and their families in the form of special care packs tailored to alleviate the emotional and psychological burdens faced by financially strained families.
The contents of the care packs are designed to occupy and bring comfort to patients while they are isolated before and after the procedure.
Zaahier Isaacs, Head of Patient Services at the SABMR says for patients in low to middle-income countries, like South Africa where resources are constrained, the aftermath of a stem cell transplant procedure can be particularly challenging.
“Beyond the physical toll of the procedure, there exists a complex tapestry of emotions – anxiety, fear, grief and hope – that demand acknowledgment and support. Recognising this critical need, we are stepping up to provide specialised care packs designed to offer comfort, solace and a sense of normalcy in the face of adversity.”
However, to further roll out this initiative to at least 100 more patients, the SABMR requires funding from corporates and public donors. While the care packs will initially be distributed to beneficiaries on their Patient Assistance Programme, the aim is to roll this out to all patients referred to the SABMR.
Isaacs says by donating towards this cause, individuals and companies can make a meaningful difference in the lives of patients.
He says companies and individuals are also welcome to donate the following items to the care packs:
- Colouring and activity books, pencils and markers
- Games, puzzles, brainteasers (for e.g. playing cards, Lego, fidget toys)
- Motivational or inspirational books
- Neck pillow, eye mask
- Journal and pen for writing
- Resistance bands to help strengthen muscles
- Face cloth, toothbrush and other hygiene items
- Lotion and lip balm for dry skin and lips
- Hot and cold packs for pain management
- Nasal spray for dry nostrils
- Thermal flask
- Food and toiletry vouchers
- Coffee and tea sachets for parents/caregivers
- Teddy bears or soft cuddly toys
- Torch (for load shedding or for use at night)
- Transplant information guidebook compiled by the SABMR
“At the heart of these care packs, lie tangible expressions of compassion and empathy, carefully curated to address the unique needs of paediatric patients. Soft blankets, stuffed animals and comforting toys serve as soothing companions, offering a sense of familiarity and security during the turbulent recovery process. Colouring books, puzzles and art supplies provide a creative outlet for young minds, fostering a sense of joy and diversion amidst the monotony of hospital life.”
He says the significance of these care packs extends far beyond their material contents.
“They serve as powerful symbols of solidarity and support, reminding paediatric patients and their families that they are not alone in their journey. In the face of adversity, these packs offer a beacon of hope, a tangible reminder that brighter days lie ahead, and that healing, both physical and emotional, is possible”.
Also included in the care packs is a detailed guide for patients and their families on what to expect post the transplant and the science behind the therapies.

A drop off facility will also be available at the SABMR offices in Cape Town, Johannesburg, and Durban for those wanting to donate any of the above items.
