KNYSNA SPORT NEWS - A group of seven swimmers from the Knysna Dragons Swimming Club were recently rewarded for their hard work during the past swimming season, during a prize-giving event by the Eden District Aquatics Association.
The club was formed in 2011 by members of the Knysna Swimming Academy and has since helped pave the way for talented swimmers from Knysna.
Its latest group of star swimmers were finally rewarded for the many hours of hard work they had put in in the pool at Knysna Primary School during the course of the season.
The prize-giving was held on 8 June in George to recognise the top swimmers in the Eden District and reward them for their achievements, with seven Knysna Dragons swimmers in attendance.
Emma Swart received awards for all freestyle and individual medley events in the 10 to 11 age category while Rebecca Pitou received awards for all the freestyle, breaststroke and individual medley events in the 12 to 13 age category.
In the category for 13 to 14-year-olds, Ella September received awards for all freestyle and breaststroke events and was also named the senior victrix ludorum at the SWD Short Course Championships. Christiaan du Plessis was named the best male swimmer at the Level 2 Championships, while André Kleynhans was named the senior victor ludorum at the SWD Short Course Championships while also receiving his full colours for participating in the SA National Junior Age Group Championships.
Thomas Ferguson received awards for all the freestyle, butterfly, and individual medley events in the 14 to 15 age category and was also named the senior victor ludorum at the SWD Long Course Championships. Thomas further received full colours for participating in both the SA Junior Nationals and the SA Youth Swimming Championships.
Finally came numerous awards for 15-year-old Aimee Canny who was rewarded for an absolutely phenomenal 2018/2019 season that saw her achieve several outstanding results.
Aimee earned two gold medals at the African Union Sport Council Region 5 U20 Youth Games in December last year, swimming two SA U15 freestyle records (50m and 100m) in the process, while also earning three relay gold medals with her respective relay teams.
Aimee also won three individual medals and two relay gold medals at the 2019 SA Senior Nationals.
Finally, Aimee earned eight medals at the 2019 SA Junior Nationals including five gold medals and three qualifying times for the International Swimming Federation (Fina) World Junior Swimming Championships in August 2019 where she'll be representing South Africa.
