KNYSNA NEWS - Several Oakhill learners excelled at swimming over the past month, returning with loads of medals in their various events.
Grade 9 Oakhill learner Aimee Canny broke yet another South African swimming record, this time in the Swim SA senior nationals in Durban between 8 and 12 April.
Her 4 x 50m freestyle relay team broke the SA record by over 1.5 seconds to win gold. Aimee also won a gold in the youth elite division and a silver in the senior division.
A number of Oakhill pupils participated in the Swim SA regional championships held in East London from 3 to 5 April. Kate Tanner, in Grade 8, swam her way to the level 2 finals in the 200m, 100m and 50m breaststroke, as well as the 50m freestyle. She achieved two personal bests (PBs), a bronze in the 50m breaststroke and a silver in the 100m breaststroke.
Grade 6 learners Rebecca Pitout, Adam Nurse and Coel Trollip also competed in the same event.
Rebecca swam seven events in level 3, reaching five finals and two reserves, and achieving a silver for her 200m freestyle. All of her swims were personal bests.
Coel and Adam both swam level 2 – their first time participating at this national event. Coel swam the 50m breaststroke, 100m freestyle and 200m individual medley, and qualified for finals for all three, with PBs. At finals he achieved a silver by placing second for 50m breaststroke. Adam made the finals for all of his races and received a bronze medal for 50m breaststroke, as well as PBs for all of his events.
