KNYSNA NEWS - Three Knysna High School rugby players were selected to attend a rugby tour to Wales and England following star performances during the annual Tony Stoops Rugby Festival during the March holidays.
The festival took place at Brackenfell High School from 15 to 21 March and a squad of 22 rugby players from Knysna High School attended.
The school's head of rugby Reinard van Lill said the players not only shone on the field but also made an impression off the field.
"Players were at their best behaviour and many compliments were given by opposing teams," Van Lill said.
The team played three matches over the week which kicked off with a clash against the Western Province Learners with Special Educational Needs (LSEN) invitational side. While the match was closely contested, the Knysa side lost.
After a rest day and some team building, the team was ready for their second match against Bosmansdam. The young players stepped up their game and won comfortably, scoring 31-7.
With sore bodies and tired minds the team played their final match against Alexander Road High School, but could not secure victory.
At the end of the festival a touring side, The Rhinos, were chosen from the 34 competing teams comprising about 750 players in total, and three youngsters from Knysna High School made the cut. They include Len Mels, Yongama Gaxela and Xander Arlow.
The team will be touring Wales and England over the next few months.
