KNYSNA NEWS - One of the less known sports tournaments held during the Knysna Oyster Festival is the Netball Oyster Tournament, which this year ensured exciting moments on the netball courts at the Hornlee Sports Field.
A total of seven teams hailing from Knysna, Sedgefield and Rheenendal took part in the senior tournament on Saturday, July 15, with a separate industrial and junior tournament held the day before.
The crowd packed the courtside for Saturday’s senior tournament, and supported their respective teams with shouts of encouragement and a song or two.
At the end of the day it was the Atlantic Spurs A team from Sedgefield that walked away with the gold after beating CX United A from Hornlee with 37 to 17 points. The Jaguars, also from Hornlee, placed third after a nail-biting 13-12 win over Atlantic Spurs B.
In the industrial tournament ,Knysna’s own police service beat the Belvidere Booties team for first place, with the team from SANParks rounding out the top three.
Gold in the junior tournament went to CX United from Hornlee after they beat the Jaguars, also from Hornlee, in a closely contested game, ending in a score of 15-13. The Winter Roses from Rheenendal placed third.
For organiser of the tournament Lorenzo van Aswegen, these tournaments are a way to prove that women’s sport is alive in Knysna. “I try to involve as many teams in and around Knysna as possible so that netball and other forms of women’s sport will be promoted in the area,” he said.
