KNYSNA NEWS - Photo archives suggest the construction of the first squash court in Knysna commenced around September 1971.
According to one of the members of the Knysna Squash Club, Gail Holton, plans to host the club's 50th-year anniversary celebrations were put on hold by Covid, and the club hosted the inaugural Knysna Legacy Squash Tournament on 21 September, celebrating the club’s existence for 50-plus years.
Based on a format used in the American NSL final round, 10 teams of three players took to the courts. The match outcomes were not reliant on individual skill but required teams to strategically determine the best use of powerplays and substitutions.
The winners of the A section were Jethro Coon, James Stead and Oz Campbell from Knysna. Warren Mullen, Wesley Gibbon and Ilse Karsten from George won the B section.
Drawcard
Plans are in place to refine the tournament and establish it as a drawcard on the Squash SA calendar, and during the annual Knysna Oyster Festival.
The club members expressed their gratitude to sponsors, Knysna Roofing, Simola Golf and Country Estate and Sybaris Kitchens and Furniture for contributing to the success of the inaugural legacy tournament.
To close the year, the Knysna Squash Club will host the annual championship final on Friday 15 November.
The club invites all past and present members to an evening of high-quality squash and camaraderie, honouring the enduring legacy of the Knysna squash community. For further details contact Holton on 083 3913 707.
