KNYSNA NEWS - After four days of battling it out with the country's best short course swimmers, Aimee Canny wrapped up her weekend yesterday with a silver medal in the 50m freestyle event.
This was Aimee's fifth medal of the event, and comes with a new SA short course record and World Short Course Championships qualification in the 100m individual medley (IM).
Having achieved the latter on Monday, Aimee would have undoubtedly been buzzing when she got back in the pool for the 50m freestyle on Tuesday (27 October. She would be coming up against 21-year-old Erin Gallagher, eight-time gold medallist at the All-African Games held in Morocco last year.
Aimee and Erin had already locked horns at the meet, previously battling it out in the 100m freestyle the day prior, where Erin edged Aimee by 0.37 seconds. In spite of Aimee's very best efforts, Erin just proved to be too quick as she secured gold with a time of 24:80, while Aimee still finished in a brilliant second with a time of 25:37.
Aimee's mother, Denni-Lynn, said Aimee was chuffed with her results, especially considering that she had recently been focusing on the longer-distance races.
