KNYSNA NEWS - The young stars of Future Legends football and netball club recently held a special year-end celebration on Leisure Isle.
The celebration was the culmination of a landmark year for Future Legends as it was during this year that it established the football and netball clubs, having previously conducted programmes with the youth in Concordia.
"We wanted to do more and to get our young ones more involved in positive and productive activities," said one of the the organisation's founders, Castro Matshona.
At the celebration at the Green Hole on Leisure Isle, which doubled as a fun beach day for the young ones, the children received certificates for their efforts in 2021.
"The children have worked very hard this year and we wanted to show how proud we are of them by awarding them with certificates of merit and excellence," Matshona explained.
The organisation itself and the various programmes that Future Legends runs are very close to Matshona's heart. "Myself and others involved in Future Legends grew up in circumstances where we have had close encounters with dangerous and illegal activities such as gangsterism," he said.
"But we never succumbed to these things and we want to make sure that the youth of today and the youth of tomorrow do not have to be surrounded by these things. We want to keep them off the streets and more involved in positive and productive activities."
Matshona has received vast support from the community in Concordia and Knysna at large, with 20 businesses providing assistance for the year-end celebrations.
"We are very grateful for their support, but going forward we will always need support from as many people as possible in order to ensure the growth of our organisation," he said.
Future Legends plans to expand even more and hopes to eventually incorporate rugby and cricket into the organisation.
