RHEENENDAL NEWS - The cricket fields just outside Rheenendal were a hive of activity last weekend, with 12 teams from as far afield as Gqeberha and Cape Town converging on the area for three days of action.
The brainchild of Keith Cretchley, the Knysna Villagers Veterans Cricket Festival was organised by Sport at Backward Point in conjunction with the Veterans Cricket Association of South Africa.
After several postponements over the past year due to Covid-19, the organisational team's efforts were realised at an event held from Friday to Sunday, 23 to 25 April.
The team roster included an Over 50's Invitational XI which featured veterans of South African cricket such as Steve Palframan and Meyrick Pringle. Legendary SA umpire and Knysna local Rudi Koertzen also made an appearance to officiate a few games.

While the main hub of operations was the Sport at Backward Point fields outside Rheenendal, where they played on five fields, there was also a sixth field being used on Ashford Farm near Plettenberg Bay Airport.
Matches got under way on Friday afternoon with some T20 action, which was followed by a spit-braai for all the players at Blackwaters River Lodge. During the course of Saturday, 35/40 over matches were played, and in the evening everyone enjoyed dinner at Knysna Hollow.
The event concluded on Sunday morning with more T20 action.
