PLETTENBERG BAY NEWS - Plett triathelete Nicky Smith exceeded her own goals at the IRONMAN 70.3 World Championships in Lahti, Finland, becoming the fastest South African woman across the line on 26 August.
"I am over the moon to have achieved a personal best time of 4h42min," said Nicky. She came 22nd in her age group, and 99th overall – including the women's professional field of 39 athletes.
"I came into the IRONMAN 70.3 World Champs in Lahti, Finland with particular goals in mind. I wanted to execute my race plan as best as possible, which would ultimately get me to a personal best time, and if I managed to do that, I would be very happy."
"Finland is one of the most beautiful places I have ever raced," she said.
"The endlessly green forests, thousands of lakes and perfectly manicured roads make it the perfect location for a world champs triathlon. I loved every minute of the lead up to the race and the race itself, and had my boyfriend, mom and dad, to share the wonderful experience with me."

She admitted the competition at the race was "on another level" and she raced against some of the fastest international professional and amateur triathletes in the world.
"It is extremely humbling! I was in awe of them as many of them flew past me on the bike," she said after the race.
