PROPERTY NEWS - With working from home going from a novelty to a permanent reality for so many people, minds wander to updating the interior of their homes.
With so many styles and personalisations to choose from, Savoy Stewart sought to establish, out of a master list of 50 design trends, which one has taken the world by storm.
Data was established by collating global Google searches made on average per month from search analytics tool SEMrush.
Key Findings:
Interior design continues to influence homeowners worldwide, with more than 861,000 average searches for specific trends
The most searched for interior design trend has over 105,000 monthly searches alone - features include raw wood and minimalism.
Industrial and Farmhouse, although polar opposites in design aesthetic, are equally as popular worldwide, ranking joint second with 95,400 Google searches per month on average.
The full dataset of 50 styles can be found on the OneDrive.

What scored best?
‘Scandinavian’ is shown to be the most searched for interior design trend per average month, with a combined total of 105,200 searches. Representative of Northern European countries such as Norway, Sweden and Denmark, Scandinavian interior design can be characterised as smooth and sleek, with frequent use of wood and simple raw materials throughout.
In second place is ‘industrial’ style. Not characterised by a location, industrial style is known for high vaulted ceilings and darker urban colours, and is clearly hugely popular as the style receives 95,400 searches per month on average worldwide.
Remarkably scoring exactly the same searches as industrial style, ‘Farmhouse’ amassed 95,400 average monthly searches. The Farmhouse interior trend is best represented by light colours, soft-touch materials and simplistic furniture with a distinctly homemade feel.
What didn’t score so well?
In 48th place on our 50 strong list, the style of ‘British Colonialism’ receives only 2,690 global searches per month. The style is best summed up with light vanilla or cream colours, hints of a tropical palette and the recurrent use of large potted plants throughout.
However, proving even less popular is ‘Georgian’, resulting in a global monthly average search quantity of just 2,330. The grandeur and wealth exuded by Georgian properties is assuredly desirable but also way out of reach of most people, resulting in its place in 49th.
Finally, residing in 50th and final place is the interior style of ‘Russian’, with average monthly searches of only 2,090. An eclectic mix of minimalism and ostentatious-ness, the Russian interior style often has a large feature wall of art or flowers, with soft furnishings and a large fireplace.
Property expert Darren Best of Savoy Stewart had this to say:
“From the data, it’s clear to see that some of the highest scoring interior trends people search for all have clean lines and smooth surfaces, very much suiting the Scandinavian style.
"However, it’s also great to see more cosy trends like Farmhouse scoring very well, with influencer Mrs Hinch recently moving into a rustic property very much inspired by the Farmhouse style. I love that throughout this list there’s so much diversity in terms of aesthetic.”
