Cape Town Mayor Patricia de Lille has approached provincial government to declare the city an emergency disaster area to get assistance from national government to manage the water crisis more effectively.
The city has been implementing stringent measures to save water, including slowly lowering the supply pressure from the biggest bulk water reservoir at Faure.
De Lille says the crisis has not affected tourism figures, with the city still seeing a high influx of international visitors.
"We're working together with the hospitality industry, from the airport when they arrive, right into the hotel rooms, we're asking them to save water with us."
