KNYSNA NEWS - Western Cape Premier Alan Winde has stepped into the fray in Knysna over the council's proposed rates hike, contained in this year's draft budget.
Winde warned that Knysna residents are set to receive the highest rates increase in the province, "by far".
He supported Ward 9 DA Councillor Sharon Sabbagh's campaign to beat the deadline for objections, Friday 19 May.
Increases of rates and taxes are potentially upwards of 50% and in some cases as much as 100%. All electricity tariffs increase by 18,65% and water by 9%.
Winde said in a statement to Knysna Plett Herald that if the proposed budget of the ANC-run municipality is passed, it will result in the highest increase in rates for any town in the Western Cape.
"This will have a direct impact on household income, which will affect many jobs. These moves by the municipality also speak to concerns over its financial sustainability. It's important that locals engage in the budget process directly before the 19 May comment period expires," said Winde.
He was on an oversight visit in Knysna to meet with stakeholders who are concerned about the governance of the town.
