PLETTENBERG BAY NEWS - A 48-year-old Saudi-Arabian tourist plummeted to her death while hiking in the Tsitsikamma National Park's Storms River section last week.
The incident happened on Wednesday 23 June en route to the Storms River Mouth suspension bridge.
NSRI Oyster Bay station commander Lodewyk van Rensburg said their volunteers were called out at about 16:40 after receiving reports that a woman had fallen onto the rocks at the Storms River Mouth.
The NSRI crew, along with SANParks rangers, local police, the Western Cape Government health services and Kareedouw fire and rescue services, immediately responded.
"A SANParks craft was launched and EMS paramedics, NSRI crew and SANParks rangers were transported to the rocks where a 48-year-old-female, from Saudi Arabia, was declared deceased," Van Rensburg said.
Information indicated that the woman was with her husband and two men, one believed to be a guide, when she fell from a considerable height onto the rocks.
"The NSRI crew and SANParks rangers recovered the body of the female with police cooperation."
The woman's body was taken into the care of the Western Cape forensic pathology unit and transported to Gqeberha. An inquest docket was opened.
SANParks spokesman Rey Thakhuli said they provided the woman's husband with all the required support in this difficult time. "SANParks sends its heartfelt condolences to the family and friends of the female tourist," Thakhuli said.
