SEDGEFIELD NEWS - Smuts United FC dropped vital points on Sunday afternoon, 19 April, after being held to a 0-0 draw by bottom-of-the-table Madibaz FC in their Safa Eden Regional League clash in Sedgefield.
The Smutsville-based side was aiming to secure a much-needed victory to improve their league standing, while the Nelson Mandela University outfit arrived with renewed intent to climb away from the lower end of the table.
The match began at a high tempo, with Madibaz FC showing early attacking intent, particularly down the right flank.
However, Smuts United defender Jureldo Armoed was solid at the back, clearing danger effectively.
The visitors tested the defence through set pieces and open play, with Mulelo Malima firing over from a promising position. Smuts United grew into the game, building from the back and controlling possession phases.
Just before halftime, Madibaz's Smile Jansen forced goalkeeper Ashwell van Rooyen into a strong save from distance, but the score remained 0-0 at the break.
The second half saw both sides pushing for a winner, but clear chances went begging. Shaunwill Solomons and Carl Dirk both missed opportunities for Smuts United, while Luyolo Mlungwana narrowly missed for Madibaz.
The result leaves Smuts United in 14th place on 26 points after 23 matches.
