KNYSNA NEWS - "This is where it all started for me. I'm coming back to my roots." Those were the words of South African swimming star Aimee Canny as she returned to the Knysna Aquatics pool last Saturday, where she trained alongside the club's young swimmers under the guidance of the very coach who first ignited her passion for the sport.
"It was in this pool, under coach Francois Boshoff, that my love for swimming was born," said the 22-year-old international, who now competes for the University of Virginia in the United States and is preparing for this week's Commonwealth Games in Glasgow.
For Knysna Aquatics' young swimmers, many clutching homemade banners welcoming their hometown hero, it was an unforgettable morning.
They watched in awe as the swimmer they had only admired from afar shared the pool with them, offered advice and encouragement, and proved that international dreams can begin in a small-town pool.
Boshoff said Canny's visit was a proud moment for the club.
"Having Aimee back where it all began is incredibly inspiring for our swimmers. She is living proof that dedication, hard work and the right support can take you all the way to the world stage."
Yet the visit also served as a timely reminder of just how important the Knysna Aquatics facility is to the community.
The club's lease agreement for the pool is currently out to tender and, unless it is renewed, the club faces losing the facility that has produced provincial, national and international swimmers. For Boshoff, the issue goes far beyond bricks and mortar.
"This pool has changed lives. It has taught children to swim, helped young athletes fulfil their potential and produced swimmers like Aimee. We want to continue giving every child who walks through these gates the same opportunity."
Knysna Aquatics caters for swimmers of all ages, from babies gaining confidence in the water through the Little Sharks Swim School to competitive swimmers representing the town at provincial and national level.
The club also works closely with local schools and plays an important role in promoting water safety and healthy lifestyles.
Parents and supporters are hopeful the lease will be renewed, ensuring that the pool where Canny's dream first took shape can continue inspiring the next generation of Knysna swimmers.
