KNYSNA NEWS - The Knysna Sea Scouts recently launched a special four-day event called ScoutReach, aimed at introducing young lesser-privileged children to the world of Scouts.
For the first ScoutReach, held from 6 to 9 October during the school holidays, Knysna Sea Scouts welcomed four different groups of children from three different care homes and organisations: Sinethemba Youth Development, Dorothy Broster Children's Home and Rondevlei Learning Centre.
Over the course of the four days the scouts covered a wide variety of topics and exercises with the children, all intended to show them the basics of scouting.
These activities were varied and included pioneering, scout cooking, trail signs, arts and crafts, knotting, campfire songs and dances and scout games.
The ScoutReach programme was an initiative led by scout Chiara Madeira, a Grade 11 learner at Keurbosch School, who was chuffed to see the turnout they received for their first ScoutReach. She said they hope to make it an annual event to keep exposing more people to what it's like to be a part of the Knysna Sea Scouts.
The 1st Knysna Sea Scouts is the local arm of the national organisation Scouts South Africa and has 30 members aged between 11 and 18.
They have general Scout meetings on Monday nights, but also go on camps and hikes throughout the year and take part in projects such as ScoutReach and various district Scout competitions.
The children took part in a wide variety of activities.
