KNYSNA NEWS - Every three months, the Rotary Club of Knysna organises an e-waste collection at Loerie Park.
The weather forecast for the collection day, Saturday 1 June, did not bode well as all-day heavy rains and wind were predicted.
Despite this, the team turned up at 07:30 and set up their station, ready to receive all manner of unwanted electronic and electrical items.
And despite the very wet and cold conditions, donors arrived in a steady stream with their goods.
They were received by employees of Henque Waste, George, who loaded the goods onto its trucks.
Allsound Security officer Wezile Mathshini oversaw the site and helped whenever he could.
A bedraggled, but amazingly cheerful team of Rotarians received the e-waste and the generous donations given by the donors.
An abundant supply of hot coffee, sandwiches, rusks, biscuits and good humour kept everyone in happy spirits.
This event has again shown that more and more Knysna citizens are becoming aware of the complex and devastating effects our discarded electronic and electrical waste has on our immediate environment.
By responsibly disposing of these goods to a company like Henque Waste, it is ensured that they are assessed, recycled or taken apart into recyclable components.
This reduces non-biodegradable garbage and toxins in our landfills and ultimately in our water systems and seas.
The Rotary Club thanks all donors of e-waste and cash donations, Allsound Security and Henque Waste for working together to make these collection days so successful.
All cash donations received will be used to fund environmental projects in the Knysna communities.
We look forward to seeing you again at Rotary’s next e-waste collection on Saturday 7 September.
