PLETTENBERG BAY NEWS - Several high-ranking politicians and youth development role players hosted a youth crime prevention indaba and career expo in Plettenberg Bay on Friday 8 March.
Among the guests were deputy police minister Bongani Mkongi, national youth development agency chair Sifiso Mtsweni and Bitou mayor Peter Lobese.
On Friday, the three not only interacted on youth-related issues, but also consulted with several youth organisations and stakeholders in the Eden district.
The engagement follows the National Youth Crime Prevention Consultative Summit held in June in Gauteng last year in an effort to fulfil the SA Police Service's strategic objective of mobilising young people in the fight against crime.
As acknowledged in the consultative summit, organisers said the aim is “to underpin an integrated, holistic and sustainable youth development initiative that can contribute to the growth of a country in which young people and their organisations not only enjoy and contribute fully to the social, economic and political spheres of life, but also recognise and develop their responsibility to build a better life for all.
The indaba and career expo was held to share information on the many career choices available within the police service and various other government departments.
The event was held at the Kwanokuthula Community Hall in Plettenberg Bay on Friday between 11:00 and 16:00.
Municipal spokesperson Manfred van Rooyen said the event, which was held in Kwanokuthula, was a massive success despite the rain as youngsters from across the district – including Uniondale, Oudtshoorn, George, Pacaltsdorp, Knysna and Bitou – attended.
“The venue was filled beyond its capacity,” Van Rooyen said.
