PLETTENBERG BAY NEWS - Plettenberg Bay is in the running for the coveted title of Africa's leading beach destination for the 10th consecutive year.
This should come as no surprise, however, as the town dominated the recent annual Blue Flag awards with six of its beaches receiving this status.Despite being a small coastal holiday destination, Plett finished just behind Cape Town – which secured 10 sites – in the Blue Flag race in the Western Cape. Nationally, Plett had the third-highest number of beaches with this prestigious title.

Plett's Blue Flag beaches include Robberg 5 (for the 10th consecutive time); Keurboomsstrand (eighth time); Natures' Valley (seventh); Lookout Beach (fifth); The Dunes (third); and The Singing Kettle Beach (second).
World Travel Awards, which annually crowns Africa's leading beach destinations, produces a list of destinations which are then voted for by travel professionals and consumers. The place with the most votes secures the title.
Recognised globally
The World Travel Awards was established in 1993 to acknowledge, reward and celebrate excellence across all sectors of the tourism industry and is recognised globally as the ultimate hallmark of quality, with winners setting the benchmark to which all others aspire.
Each year, World Travel Awards covers the globe with a series of regional gala ceremonies staged to celebrate the achievements and strengths of the travel industry within each key geographical region.
"Our beaches and shorelines are our number one asset, and collectively as a community we recognise this and 'all hands are on deck' when it comes to maintaining them. With support from Bitou Municipality and its beach personnel, our NSRI team and local initiatives we are able to continue showcasing this beautiful asset of Plett," said Plett Tourism chair Peter Wallington.
Other contenders in the competition include Bazaruto in Mozambique, Cape Town, Diani Beach in Kenya, Sharm El Sheikh in Egypt and Zanzibar in Tanzania.
