KNYSNA NEWS - Despite the recent fires that have ravaged most of the Greater Knysna areas, learners of Rheenendal Primary School still have something to be excited about during these tumultuous times.
Excited learners who moved into the new Rheenendal Primary School just outside Knysna this month are looking forward to the completion of the sports field in August. The Department of Transport and Public Works (DTPW) commissioned the project for the Western Cape Education Department (WCED) in January 2016 at a cost of R45 million.
The new school provides top-quality accommodation for up to 1 250 learners. Teaching facilities comprise 15 senior phase classrooms, nine foundation phase classrooms, and three Grade R classrooms. The brightly painted complex also boasts a hall, an administration building, a library, and caretaker’s facilities.
During the construction period, a number of short-term job opportunities were created for local persons. A total of R3.1 million went to local labour from Rheenendal and surrounding areas. In addition, 20 people benefited from on-site skills training, and six learners benefited from the project through the National Youth Service upliftment programme.
DTPW and WCED are confident that this new school will become an institution where learners, educators and parents feel safe and secure, and where quality teaching and learning can take place. This is in line with the Western Cape Government’s Provincial Strategic Goal 2, to improve education outcomes and opportunities for youth development.
