KNYSNA NEWS - The New Dawn Hope Foundation in Knysna celebrated Easter differently this year teaching the children about social distancing, the importance of wearing a mask, and washing of hands with soap to prevent the coronavirus from spreading.
With the extended lockdown period and the closing down of schools, the non-profit organisation makes ways to keep the children entertained and off the street while providing them with different meals everyday.
“We are teaching the New Dawn Hope children the benefits of using face masks and gave some of them masks, Easter Eggs and our usual lunch. Wow, what a good feeling to give a child a smile at Easter – together we can change the new generation” said founding director Busi Sithole.
“We Sometimes cook spaghetti, rice, samp and chicken depending on the budget” she said.
The Zimbabwean-born said she does what she does simply because she is passionate about charity work, regardless of whether they get donations or financial assistance. “I have raised two orphans since the age of three years, they are now in high school.”
Busi said she was approached by a woman in the community who offered to help with the cooking and they now use her house for preparing the food as they do not have a centre or shelter for the children yet.
Her desire this year is to expand the organisation so that people can participate in handwork. “People stand around in the community with nothing to do,” Busi added.
