Update
KNYSNA NEWS - On Thursday 27 August, the Knysna Municipal Council set aside its decision made in May this year to write off irregular expenditure associated with some of the so-called "piggy-back contracts" referred to in the Auditor-General's 2018/2019 report on the municipality.
On the recommendation of current Acting Municipal Manager Dr Louis Scheepers, the case was referred to the Municipal Public Accounts Committee (MPAC).
The reversal of the council's decision earlier this year to write off R93-m of irregular expenditure on the recommendation of former Acting Municipal Manager Dr Michele Gratz, followed a request to Council by the Knysna Ratepayer's Association (KRA) on 16 August to rescind what the association termed the "unlawful decision".
KRA said that due process was not followed and the matter should first have been referred to MPAC for consideration before Council made its decision.
On 18 August, Gratz, via her legal counsel Sohn and Associates, denied any wrongdoing by Council in writing off the said amount.
