STORMS RIVER NEWS - A 70-year-old Spanish tourist, who suffered serious injuries while hiking on the Waterfall Trail part of the Storms River Tsitsikamma Nature Reserve Otter Trail, was airlifted to safety.
Lodewyk van Rensburg, the NSRI Oyster Bay station commander, said duty crews were activated following reports from SANParks Tsitsikamma rangers of a hiker who had fallen and injured himself.
NSRI Storms River, NSRI Oyster Bay, SANParks Tsitsikamma rangers and the Relay ambulance service responded to the emergency on Tuesday 24 September.
The Eastern Cape government health emergency metro control services and their Western Cape counterparts coordinated the activation of the EMS/AMS Skymed rescue helicopter.
“On arrival on the scene, medical treatment commenced on a 70-year-old male tourist from Spain, found to have suffered serious injuries after falling while hiking,” said Van Rensburg.
A landing zone was prepared near the scene and the patient was stabilised and secured in a Bauman basket stretcher, and was airlifted to the landing zone by the rescue helicopter.
“Once at the landing zone the patient was transferred into the Relay ambulance and transported to hospital in a stable condition for further medical care.
“The swift response and close cooperation between all services is commended,” said the NSRI’s Craig Lambinon in a media release.
