PLETTENBERG BAY NEWS - Bitou Municipality has launched a green month initiative in honour of Madiba.
It has urged residents to honour former president Nelson Mandela's legacy during Mandela Month by building a cleaner, greener Bitou - together.
The municipality has invited all residents to participate in the launch of two recycling buy-back centres in the Kwanokuthula and New Horizons community halls.
Residents have been asked to bring their recyclable materials - paper, plastic, glass and cans - to not only help protect the environment, but to earn a little extra while doing good for their community.
Celebrating 67 Minutes for Mandela Day at Kwano-kuthula's Simunye Hall saw the official launch of the buy-back centre initiative.
Meaningful engagement
The event kicked off on Tuesday 22 July with a welcome by Speaker Mavis Busakwe, setting the tone for a day of community engagement.
Juan Windvogel of the waste management department led an information session on the importance of recycling and how the community can get involved. Mkhusela Makwela, manager of the buy-back centre, expressed his gratitude for the opportunity to serve the community and promote environmental awareness.
Gain
Lisl Doherty of Polyco emphasised the importance of collaboration across sectors to make recycling work. "Waste is a resource," she said.
She explained that the buy-back centre model created a gain for all parties.
