GARDEN ROUTE NEWS - After three years of planning, building and testing, the longest multiline and highest zipline in the Garden Route will open in the Harkerville section of the Garden Route National Park (GRNP) this week.
The project, driven by SANParks (in charge of the GRNP) and headed up by SA Forest Adventures, began in early 2017, but it suffered major delays due to the devastating fires in 2017. Then, when it was completed in March this year all was put on hold once again due to the Covid-19 pandemic and related lockdown.
But now, six months later, they will officially launch and open to the public on Friday 18 September.
According to SA Forest Adventures managing director Clinton Lerm, the zipline is made up of four lines totalling 2.2km in length and ranging between 200 and 250m above the Harkerville gorge. “This makes it both the longest and the highest zipline in the Garden Route,” he said, adding that they expect to expand to six lines by the end of the year.
The system spans the gorge with sound-cancelling lines to reduce noise pollution, offering breathtaking views of the Indian Ocean to one side and the Harkerville forests to the other.
GRNP Knysna manager Megan Taplin is excited about the new addition to the park’s offerings. “We are very excited to add environmentally friendly adventure products which will attract more visitors to our park and complement the existing hiking and mountain bike trails,” she said.
