PLETTENBERG BAY NEWS – In light of the Roodefontein Dam level dropping below 80%, the Bitou Municipality has implemented moderate water restrictions to mitigate possible future water shortages in and around Plettenberg Bay.
The Bitou Municipal Manager, Mbulelo Memani, said Level 1 water restrictions were implemented from 6 February. He said that implementing restrictions is in line with the municipality's drought management policy.
The restrictions mean that water obtained from the municipality's water supply system may only be used to water gardens, fields and other green areas twice a week, for two hours per day.
It is also now limited for uses such as topping up or filling fountains and ornamental ponds, filling swimming pools and washing paved areas and buildings.
The use of municipal water via hosepipes, sprinkler and other similar systems, automatic swimming pool fillers and automatic urinal flushing systems, is prohibited.
Signs
Memani urged residents to erect signs where water from sources other than the municipality's water supply system is used for irrigation.
Landowners have to notify the engineering services directorate in writing of the existence of boreholes on their properties. Those who want to sink boreholes need to apply at the Department of Water and Sanitation and must also notify the municipality.
All consumption must be reduced by at least 15% and failure to achieve this will result in the municipality being forced to impose stricter measures.
