ANC councillor, Lenhard Richard Jonas, resigned from the ANC and his position as councillor necessitates the by-election. "We suspect that he crossed the floor," said Putco Mapitiza, ANC regional secretary. Wayne Craig, the DA's Ward 2 councillor went on record saying, "Jonas resigned from the ANC. He did not join the DA."
Zille came out in support of Elaine Paulse, currently a DA Proportional Representation (PR) councillor, who will be standing for election as ward councillor. Should she be elected, a PR seat on the Bitou Municipal Council will become available.
ANC deputy secretary-general, Jesse Duarte visited Plett on Wednesday, July 10. She came out in support of Hilda Plaatjies, the ANC's Ward 4 candidate for this by-election.
