KNYSNA NEWS - Have you ever wondered how authors do what they do? Authors are not often heard from or seen face to face; to readers, they may seem like nothing more than a name on a page. However, the reality of the hardworking authors behind books became evident to some of Knysna High School's (KHS) Grade 10 learners when they had the privilege of hearing from a talented South African author, Edyth Bulbring, on 11 March.
Bulbring is currently travelling around South Africa to speak about her work and attend book signings.
She spoke to the learners at Knysna High School about her seventh published book, The Mark.
From barcodes to little girls in Italy, she draws inspiration from her life and her children's lives, transforming these experiences into captivating novels.
Tips for young writers
During her time at the school, Bulbring shared three tips for writers. Number one: Read. You cannot write well unless you read. Find time to read every day and your writing will drastically improve. Number two: Write every day. Whether it is a blog post, a journal entry or a poem, make writing a part of your daily routine. Number three: Be aware. Use your senses; take note of your surroundings. You cannot draw inspiration from the world around you unless you first notice and appreciate it.
Bulbring also shared advice on becoming a published author. She advised the learners to enter short story competitions and research publishers to explore various options. She also stressed the importance of receiving honest feedback. Family and friends will likely be subjective and hesitant to point out any flaws; it is better to find objective, unbiased critics who will be completely honest.
What about writer's block?
On the subject of writer's block, Bulbring's first suggestion was to read. When you cannot write, read other authors' writing to get back on track. Otherwise, she suggests, go for a walk, talk to someone, or just do something! "My kids know I'm facing writer's block when I look forward to going to PTA meetings," Bulbring said. "Normally I hate them, but something always happens that gives me an idea for my writing."
Bulbring's words were an inspiration to many Grade 10 learners who aspire to be the successful authors of their generation.
