GARDEN ROUTE NEWS - "I never saw myself as someone with a cane and a chain. It was always the plan to get things right, do what I had to do, and then move on," says the Garden Route District Municipality's Mayor, Andrew Stroebel, when asked about his resignation earlier this week.
"I am now going to practise my other love in the private sector world. There are other plans as well."
Stroebel, who will remain the mayor until 31 October, said his decision was guided by timing and respect for the DA's upcoming candidate process, to give space for the new leaders of tomorrow.
"Of course I will always be willing to help out if I am needed, but I will not make myself available for the next election. It is only right that I step down before the DA announces its new candidates for the municipalities."
Stroebel says his decision carries no hidden agenda and that stepping down was simply because it felt like the right time.
"I am not stepping down from the DA, but from my governance role as a public representative," he says. "It all started in 2009 when the business world wanted someone in politics - a need that led my life in that direction. I look forward to taking on new projects."
His resignation marks the end of a dedicated political career, but also the start of a new venture into the private sector, where he says he is eager to put his passion and energy into practice.
The DA's provincial leader, Tertuis Simmers, and East Region's chairperson, Venolea Fortuin, praised his leadership.
"Andrew has served his community with dignity since joining the party in 2009. He amplified the true values of the DA, and we wish him the very best as he takes on this new chapter."
Track record
During his time in politics, Stroebel left an extensive track record. At district level, he was instrumental in driving tourism, economic growth and development, and in helping to secure a new contractor for the regional landfill site through the Council's processes.
He also oversaw initiatives to restore financial stability through cost-cutting measurements, championed reforms that led to consecutive clean audits, and ensured that his previous municipality gained recognition as one of the most stable in the country.
Stroebel's leadership roles stretched across the DA, from serving as the Hessequa Constituency's chairperson and member of the WC Provincial Executive Committee, to managing a successful 2024 election campaign in the 14 municipalities of the East Region, where the DA grew its support despite difficult conditions.
Since being elected as mayor
in June 2024, Stroebel focused on rebuilding public trust, cutting costs, saving millions through strict containment measures, and securing a clean audit.
Under his watch, the municipality introduced new by-laws, initiated the process for the privatisation of campsites, established a dog-friendly policy for the tourism sector, streamlined its property portfolio, and strengthened its collaboration with tourism and business sectors.
He also prioritised environmental issues, such as tackling alien vegetation to reduce fire risks.
Remarkably, throughout his political career, Stroebel maintained 100% attendance in governance meetings and never once called in sick.
