INTERNATIONAL NEWS - An Indonesian man was killed when his mother’s coffin fell from a funeral tower and crushed him during a burial ritual on the island of Sulawesi, police said Sunday.
Samen Kondorura (40) died when the bamboo ladder pallbearers were climbing, to place the coffin onto the lakkian, slipped and they lost their footing.
A lakkian is an ornately carved tower in which the deceased are placed in the region as part of elaborate traditional funeral rites.
The pallbearers had almost reached the top of the ladder, and were about to place the casket on a plinth, when it suddenly gave way.
The men tumbled several metres and the coffin crushed Samen as it plummeted to the ground.
