GARDEN ROUTE NEWS - If you've ever wanted to do something for the benefit of the ocean, your chance has come.
The Motion for the Ocean event this weekend, organised by the Nature's Valley Trust (NVT), is meant to bring people's attention back to the pressing issue of the health of our oceans.
It is also aimed at informing the public about NVT and the work the organisation does to garner much-needed funding. However, stresses David Krone, an NVT volunteer, even though the event is expected to bolster funding, this is not the primary goal.
"We are targeting as many participants as possible and not an amount of money. We believe this is more about building awareness and enabling people to contribute to this cause," Krone explains. "We hope the event will bring awareness of the threats posed to our oceans, while encouraging people to get outside and moving."
Nature's Valley has been under the watchful eye of NVT ever since the organisation's founding in 2000.
The event will take place in a virtual format, allowing participants from around the world to take part in their own capacity. "We are encouraging people to participate wherever they are in the world and by any means of movement they wish and we hope people will post photographs of themselves participating on social media," says Krone.
Participants can choose between running, walking, cycling, swimming, or moving in any other way they want to, to participate and do their bit.
The official dates for the event are 20 to 22 March, and people will be able to enter throughout the weekend.
