PLETTENBERG BAY NEWS - The much-anticipated Qolweni housing project in Bitou is taking shape with the first steps taken in recent weeks.
The project has been a point of contention that led to several protests over the past year - the latest bringing the town to a standstill for five days in October last year.
The unrest was sparked by mistrust between residents, who had been fighting for housing for several years, and the municipality. A truce was eventually reached between the parties and the project got underway earlier this year.
Ward 3 Councillor Xola Matyila said he is very excited to see "great strides" being made on the project. "There is good progress made in an effort to clear the area on which the 169 top structures will be built," Matyila said.

He added that the demolishing of structures and relocating of the 224 non-qualifying residents occupying the area, are in progress. "Emergency houses are being built on identified infill sites within the community. The spaces are fast opening up and we will soon see the commencement of the construction of the 169 top structures."
He also expressed his appreciation of the cooperation between all parties involved.
"Everyone is committed and focused on the main goal, which is to see the long-awaited housing construction commencing," a Qolweni resident said.
